Country standards & formatting

Business letter layouts & DIN 5008 standards.

Recruiters expect a cleanly formatted business letter. FlowResume adapts to local conventions—standard modern business letter formatting for US, UK, and global applications, or DIN 5008 for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Standard marginsClean margins and balanced white space.
Digital signatureScanned or digital signature supported.

Structure

Opening, body, close.

Three parts on one page. Each has a job, and every sentence has to do it. This is how you build a letter that sounds like this job and not like a template.

Opening

One sentence that shows you mean exactly this job. Start with the company, the project or the problem from the ad, not with “I hereby apply”.

ExampleYour platform schedules thousands of deliveries in real time every day. That is exactly the type of system I have spent the last seven years building.

Body

One or two paragraphs: what does the job ask for, and which of your experiences fits? Give one or two concrete results with a number or proof, and point to your CV instead of repeating it.

ExampleAt Ostwerk, I introduced on-call rotations for six engineering teams and cut production incidents by 40% in two quarters.

Close

Give the earliest start date or your notice period, and the next step, a conversation. No filler, no “unfortunately” or “possibly”.

ExampleI look forward to discussing how my experience in distributed systems can support your infrastructure goals.

Examples

Three openings for three situations.

The sample paragraphs illustrate how to connect your experience to the job requirements. Adapt the concepts with your own achievements.

Career start

During my logistics internship, I migrated shipment tracking for 200 client accounts from a spreadsheet into an automated analytics dashboard. I am excited to bring this analytical rigor to your Junior Data Analyst role.

Why it works: An internship counts when it fits the job. The paragraph names the task, the scale and the result, and says which role the application is for.

Career change

Five years in classroom teaching taught me how to break down complex technical topics into intuitive concepts. For your Onboarding team, I developed and led comprehensive onboarding courses for 60 new colleagues.

Why it works: The paragraph translates the former job into a skill the new role needs, and proves it with a concrete task.

A move with experience

After eight years in enterprise software sales, I want to transition into product management to guide customer solutions directly. In my current role, I manage twelve enterprise accounts while maintaining high retention.

Why it works: The wish to move is explained as a direction, not an escape. A current number shows that the work so far holds up.

FAQ

Questions about cover letters

Does it make up experience?

No. The letter uses facts from your career profile and the job ad. You see every sentence before you send it, and you can edit or delete any of them.

Can I write it in German and English?

Yes. Pick the language before you draft, or translate a finished letter for 11 credits. The layout stays.

What does a letter cost?

6 credits per letter, shown on the button before you click. If you reject the draft, the credits come back.

Does it adapt to international and German standards?

Yes. English letters follow clean modern business standards; German letters automatically follow the DIN 5008 structure with header, address, date, and subject blocks.

How long is a cover letter?

Usually one page with three or four short paragraphs. One thought per paragraph beats one block. You do not have to repeat what is in your CV.

Whom do I address if the ad names nobody?

Ask if you can: a call or a short email to the HR team will give you the name. If that fails, write “Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,”. At startups, “Guten Tag,” is common too.

Do I have to name a salary in the letter?

Only if the ad asks for it. Then give a range as annual gross in the last paragraph. If the ad asks for nothing, keep the topic for the interview.
