Writing your resume in English: differences that matter
No photo, no birth date, different phrasing: what works differently in an English resume – with vocabulary help.
An English resume is not a translation but a retelling: different conventions, different emphasis, different length.
What to drop
- No photo, no birth date: both count as bias risks and do not belong.
- No signature: signatures are unusual in English resumes.
- No grade lists: name degrees, details only on request.
What sounds different
- Active verbs: every line starts with a verb – led, built, cut, grew.
- Results first: numbers and impact come before duties.
- US or UK: pick one variant and stay consistent, including date formats.
The editor translates your sections and adapts conventions per language.
Frequently asked questions
Resume or CV?
In the US the short document is a resume, in the UK a CV – usually the same thing: one to two pages.

Original plus English explanation, such as Diplom (equivalent to a master's degree).
