Developers are hired for results, not buzzwords. Your resume should show in thirty seconds: stack, level of experience and at least one measurable result. The sample below shows what that can look like, with a fictional person and wording you can transfer to your own positions.

Sample resume

The following resume belongs to a fictional sample person. It shows structure, order and wording for the role Software Developer.

What to notice

  • The profile text names experience, stack and focus in three sentences.
  • Every position has a result with a number, not only a duty.
  • The stack sits under skills, not as a long unstructured keyword list.

Fictional sample person. All details are made up.

How to write the profile text

“Backend developer with five years of experience in Java and TypeScript. Focus: APIs, distributed databases and reliable delivery. Looking for a role with responsibility for architecture and code quality.”

Three sentences are enough: experience with years and stack, focus, goal. Adapt the last sentence to the job. If you want to lead a team, say so; if you want to go deeper into the technology, say that.

Work experience: bullet points to adopt

Start every bullet with an action verb and name a result. You can adapt these patterns to your positions, with your own provable numbers:

Results

  • Built a REST API for 40 partner integrations; cut response time by 35%.
  • Cut pipeline build time from 22 to 8 minutes.
  • Optimised database queries; reduced dashboard load time from 6 to 2 seconds.

Responsibility

  • Took over code reviews for an engineering squad of six developers.
  • Prepared and supported the architecture decision to migrate to microservices.
  • Guided two junior developers and introduced them to the codebase.

Skills that count

Order skills by relevance for the job, not alphabetically, and name years of experience or context for the most important ones.

  • Languages with experience, for example “Java (5 years), TypeScript (4 years)”
  • Databases and persistence: PostgreSQL, migrations, performance tuning
  • Delivery tools: Git, Docker, CI/CD, AWS
  • Practices: automated testing, code review, agile workflows
  • Spoken languages: English and additional languages with proficiency level

Common mistakes

  • A long list of technologies without context: it does not say what you built with them.
  • Duties instead of results: “Maintained the API” says less than “Cut response time by 35%”.
  • Links to GitHub profiles that have been empty for years. Link two or three projects you would still show today.

Frequently asked questions

What matters more: stack or projects?

Projects with results. A stack block belongs in, but hiring decisions turn on measurable outcomes, such as shorter load times or automated processes.

Does GitHub belong on the resume?

Yes, if the profile is maintained. Link two or three meaningful repositories instead of only the profile link.

How long can a developer's resume be?

One page for a career start, two pages with several years of experience. Summarise older positions briefly.
