US resume

The US resume: one page that proves impact.

US hiring moves fast and filters hard: most large employers screen through applicant tracking systems before a human reads a word. The winning format is short, achievement-led and free of anything that invites bias — no photo, no date of birth, no marital status.

The format recruiters scan first

Contact line, then a 2–3 line summary, then experience in reverse-chronological order with 3–5 achievement bullets per role — each with a verb and a number where you have one. Skills and education close the page. Use a clean single-column layout on US Letter; mirror the ad's keywords honestly so the ATS parses you into the right bucket.

What stays out

Federal anti-discrimination law (EEOC enforcement) is the backdrop: employers avoid personal markers, and many systems strip them anyway. Leave out photos, age, family status and salary history; a city and state, phone, email and LinkedIn URL are the whole header.

US resume

The cover letter that gets read

Three or four short paragraphs on one page: the role and why this company, one or two proofs with numbers, and a close with a next step. Never repeat the resume — add the story behind one result. FlowResume drafts it from the same profile facts in your tone, then you edit every sentence.

US resume questions

Do US employers want a photo?

No — leave it out. Photos invite bias concerns and add nothing the ATS can score; the only exceptions are on-camera roles like acting or modelling.

One page or two?

One page under about ten years of relevant experience; two pages max beyond that, with the strongest material on page one.
